Tikkun Olam. Repair the world.
The Neighbors Assisting Directly In Volunteering (NADIV) program is a project of Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc. (CHAI) to encourage individuals of all ages to volunteer year round to help seniors and adults with disabilities remain safely and confidently in their own homes.
Volunteers work under CHAI’s Senior Home Repair Program, which serves low to moderate income seniors and disabled adult homeowners with repairs and modifications. Repairs include changing light bulbs, painting railings, and yard beautification, whereas a house modification may be installing a wheelchair ramp or grab bars.
Thirty-two percent of the households in CHAI’s service area are headed by people over the age of 65 and have incomes under $25,000. For people over 85, the median household income is just $16,161. Additionally, CHAI estimates that over half of the approximately 5,000 people over the age of 65 live in their own homes, thanks in large part to volunteer assistance.
For senior adults living on a limited income, a leaking roof or broken furnace may be the very thing that displaces them. Through the help of one-time and ongoing volunteers, the NADIV program allows seniors to remain safely and confidently in their own homes.
